Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant but do not allow to brown, 1 min. Add tomatoes and salt and cook on medium-low about 15 min. or until tomatoes release their liquid and fall apart. Season with pepper, add basil, and cook for a few min. longer, until basil is just wilted. Mash with a fork or purée, if desired. Spread on a pizza crust or enjoy with your favourite pasta.
