All You Need to Know About Peaches

Every summer, Western Canada gets its hands on some of the juiciest peaches around, grown and harvested in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. With its long, sunny days and warm climate, the region is perfect for stone fruits, and towns like Penticton, Kelowna, and Summerland are packed with orchards offering u-pick options from late July through early September.

Knowing how to choose and, more importantly, how to store those peaches makes all the difference. That’s where fresh peach storage tips come in handy, and you can stretch the summer sweetness and enjoy those golden gems on your own time. Let’s get into it.

How to Pick Peaches

Whether you're at the local orchard or your neighbourhood Safeway, picking the right peach comes down to a few key things. First, go by feel. You're looking for one that's slightly soft when gently squeezed but not mushy. Next, check the colour: a deep golden yellow means it's ripe and ready, while any green means it still needs time. And always trust your nose! A sweet, fragrant scent is a sure sign it's ready to enjoy.

Peach Storage Tips

You’ve gone to the store, picked your local peaches, and now you’re home! Now it’s time to master your fresh peach storage so you and the family can enjoy them whenever you’re ready. A little know-how goes a long way in keeping those peaches just right.

Tip 1 - Let Them Ripen

If you’re unpacking your groceries and notice your peaches are still a bit firm, no worries. That just means they need a little time. Leave them out on the counter for a couple of days to ripen up. Want to speed things along? Pop them in a paper bag, and they’ll be ready to enjoy even sooner.

Tip 2 - The Fridge is Your Friend

Once your peaches are soft and ripe, it’s time to put them in the fridge. Keeping them cool helps slow down spoilage and locks in all that sweet, juicy goodness so they’re ready when you are. Also, choose a breathable container over a plastic bag, as the latter can cause them to become mushy or mouldy.

Tip 3 - Freeze ‘em

If you brought home a few too many peaches, just slice them up, remove the pits, and lay the slices on a single layer of a baking sheet so they don’t stick today. Once they are frozen solid, transfer them to a freezer bag or container. Now you have peaches ready for smoothies, baking or a mid-winter taste of summer.
