Given everything we hear about the environment these days, it’s easy to understand why so many people care about protecting the planet and making sure there are enough resources for the future. With Sustainable Blue, salmon lovers can enjoy their favourite dishes and feel good knowing they're Ocean Wise Seafood and raised without added antibiotics or growth hormones.

Learning about Sustainable Blue means understanding things like closed-loop farming, where fish are raised in a controlled environment, and how land farming differs from water farming. It's important to know the difference between wild-caught and farmed salmon and why sustainable fishing practices are key in helping to keep our oceans healthy.

What is Sustainable Blue?

Sustainable Blue began its pilot program in September 2021, using a cutting-edge saltwater aquaculture system in Nova Scotia to raise salmon sustainably. They continue to raise fish in a land-based farm that uses a closed-loop system. Learn more about Sustainable Blue on OurPart.

What is a Closed-Loop system?

A closed-loop system is where wastewater is continually filtered and reused. This system not only helps the reduction of waste and limits run-off, but it also means that the salmon are not exposed to diseases or bacteria.

What is Land Farming and How Does it Work?

A land-based farm like Sustainable Blue, helps minimize disruption to the ocean's delicate ecosystem and wild salmon. They start with Atlantic salmon eggs certified as disease-free and incubate them. Once the fry hatch, they move into feed tanks, swimming against a current like in the wild. The salmon will eventually be transferred from freshwater to saltwater tanks until they are ready to be harvested. Since the farm is also land-based, there’s no risk of salmon escaping to the wild.

Wild Caught Vs. Farmed Salmon

Wild-caught salmon are captured in their natural habitat rather than farmed in controlled environments. Farmed salmon, like the Ocean Wise seafood at Sustainable Blue, are raised in a land-based, closed-loop system without impacting the surrounding ecosystems.

The Importance of Sustainability

Sustainability is crucial as it helps maintain the long-term health of fish species and marine ecosystems by ensuring their stability and balance. Sustainable Blue helps minimize its environmental impact by using wastewater to generate electricity. Wastewater is then cleaned and returned to the tanks. It’s all about helping to prevent harm to sensitive coastal ecosystems and wild salmon populations.
