Caramelized Onion & Mushroom Topper

Makes: 1 1/2 cups

Ingredients

  1. 2 tbsp (30 mL) olive oil, divided
  2. 1/2 lb (250 g) sliced white or brown mushrooms
  3. 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt, divided
  4. 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  5. 3 tbsp (45 mL) balsamic vinegar
  6. 2 tbsp (30 mL) Sensations by Compliments 100% Pure Maple Syrup
  7. 2 tbsp (30 mL) finely chopped parsley

Method

  1. Heat 1 tbsp (15 mL) oil in large skillet set over medium heat. Add mushrooms, sprinkle with 1/4 tsp (1mL) salt and cook 8 to 10 min. until golden brown. Transfer to plate.
  2. In same skillet, heat remaining 1 tbsp (15 mL) oil. Add onions and remaining 1/4 tsp (1mL) salt. Cook about 15 min., stirring often, until tender and golden. Add mushrooms back into skillet. Stir in vinegar and maple syrup. Cook 3 min., stirring often, until glaze is thickened and coats mushrooms and onions. Stir in parsley.
  3. Serve as a topper for grilled hot dogs, sausages, burgers, veggies or pasta.
